I've always been a fan of Milwaukee Magazine. I don't know exactly when it happened that I decided that my next goal would be to photograph for them. I think it's because I feel quite comfortable with my job with the Shepherd, and I'd really like to take the next step.

The thing with freelance photography, I feel, is that there never really is one way to do things. Additionally, with the onset of digital photography, there are so many more choices when showing your work. I was a bit stumped as to how to present my work: should I make a special web page, put the images on a CD, make prints? So many choices!

I decided to make 8x10 prints - and they turned out beautifully! Then I thought: what should I put the prints in? There are photo boxes, professional portfolios that are priced at $100+, portfolio cases....again, more choices. I opted for a traditional 8x10 hardcover portfolio where you slip in the photos.

I ended up meeting with a lovely woman at Milwaukee Magazine. I picked her brain and asked what way she thought the photos should be presented. (I'd like to proceed with approaching other magazines as well). She confirmed some ideas that I already had milling around in my brain: being more creative with my presentation.

Luckily, a great friend of mine is a graphic designer. Furthermore, I have some ideas that had been rolling in my head for presenting my work, so I am excited to start this new process. I wonder where it will lead me?

  • Jessica ~ thanks for stopping by and subscribing to our blog!  My husband worked for the Chicago Sun-Times for 14 years... he's totally familiar with the newspaper and magazine industry... also advertising.  I'm sure he'd love to share his experiences with you on how to pump up the volume of your freelancing!  He's the freelance king!  Definitely presentation is the key!  You're work is great, you should have no problems!!!  Also, if you're looking to book some open dates with weddings, Bob help start Bella Pictures and they are always looking for Photographers!  They are a nationwide wedding photography agency.  It's a great way to fill up your dates, make extra money, keep you on top of your game and use all your photos for your own promotion (without mentioning Bella's name)... it's really a win, win for photographers!  ~  Dawn

Ps:  I just noticed your email... thank you!!!
