Last month, M Magazine flew me to New York to photograph Mount Mary Alum, Donna Ricco for the fashion and beauty issue. You can view the article in the new issue which came out last week!
Soooooooooooo….this is the first time I’ve ever been flown somewhere for a photography job, and needless to say, I was very nervous! I was only there overnight, and didn’t want to check in any photography luggage, in case they lost my bag or something. There also wasn’t really a budget for me to rent or ship my equipment. My solution was to travel light, and shoot old school: with natural light. Even though this is how I learned photography, I felt a little naked not having a strobe kit with me.
In the first photo, I actually just lit Donna with the track lighting that was highlighting her dresses. I actually am really happy with how the lighting turn out. I simply make sure that she kept her chin up slightly so the light filled in her eyes. In the second photo, we photographed her outside of her studio, on 7th ave. Again, natural light was used.
It was a nervewracking, exciting experience for me. And the biggest plus? Donna Ricco is a really cool lady. Maybe it’s her midwestern sweetness that comes through her New York city elegance?
